Moore Park Golf Course is one of Sydney’s most visible and highly used public golf facilities, sitting at the intersection of community recreation and elite sport. In 2024, SPORTENG was engaged to support  Golf Australia in shaping a future-focused masterplan that balances performance, accessibility, and broader community use.

Our role focused on translating strategic intent into a clear, buildable vision. Through master planning, feasibility analysis, and 3D visualisation, we helped define how the course could evolve while maintaining its core function and value to the community.

THE CHALLENGE

Working with The Moore Park Golf Collective—comprising of Golf Australia, PGA Australia, Golf NSW, and Moore Park Golf Club – SPORTENG were tasked with creating a masterplan to revitalize the Moore Park Golf Club into a world-class recreational and golf hub.

The Moore Park Golf Collective project faced several significant challenges in its effort to transform Moore Park into a world-class recreational and golf facility. One of the primary hurdles was balancing the diverse interests of various stakeholders, including golfers, recreational users, local communities, and the NSW Government, to ensure the golf course’s legacy was preserved while expanding its appeal to a broader audience.

The project also needed to maximise the use of under-utilised and undeveloped areas to incorporate new recreational facilities without compromising the integrity of the 18-hole golf course, which serves local, state, and national competitions.

Another critical challenge was ensuring environmental sustainability, particularly through the regeneration of the endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. The team had to integrate innovative design elements and collaborate with organisations like IndigiGrow to enhance biodiversity while maintaining a vision for a financially and environmentally sustainable future.

THE SOLUTION

We worked closely with Golf Australia and the project team through a structured, two-phase approach that combined technical rigour with clear communication.

The process began with targeted workshops to unpack opportunities within the existing course layout. These sessions focused on identifying areas of potential change, understanding how the course is used today, and exploring how it could better serve both golfers and the wider community. From there, we reviewed available site information and translated insights into a functional layout plan that set the foundation for the draft masterplan.

The draft masterplan provided a clear spatial framework for the site. It mapped out how different zones could operate, where improvements could be made, and how the course could evolve over time.

In the second phase, we developed detailed 3D renders to bring the masterplan to life. These visuals were designed to support community consultation, making it easier for stakeholders to understand the proposed changes and engage with the future vision of the site.

Alongside the core master planning work, we also explored broader opportunities across and beyond the site. This included investigating potential areas for additional sports field development within Moore Park and assessing existing and future active open space within a 2km radius. This wider lens helped position the golf course within its surrounding recreational network, not just as a standalone facility.

The proposal reflects the Collective’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and innovation, with several new public spaces planned for the area, including:

  • Adventure playground and nature play space

  • Dog park and BBQ/picnic facilities

  • Fitness trail with terracing and stunning city views

  • Football oval, skate park, seating areas

  • Half courts and futsal court

  • BMX pump track and dedicated riding zone

  • Athletics precinct

  • 3 km of connected walking, running, and cycling paths

  • Environmental spaces for Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub regeneration

  • Multi-level 500-space car park integrated into the landscape

  • Reduced par-68 18-hole public golf course supporting local, state, and national competitions

  • Mini golf course, practice putting green, and chipping area

  • Shortened high-tech driving range with expanded bay options

THE RESULTS

SPORTENG’s bold, city-shaping vision will not only enhance the golf experience but also transform Moore Park Golf Club into a vibrant destination for the entire community. It introduced new spaces like playgrounds, a dog park, fitness trails, sports courts, and a football oval while improving access with 3 kilometres of walking and cycling paths.

The golf course was preserved with a reduced par-68 layout, adding modern features like a high-tech driving range and mini golf, ensuring it remained a top destination for public golf and competitions.

Environmental efforts included regenerating endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub, promoting biodiversity and sustainability. The project also boosted local jobs in management, events, and hospitality, creating a hub for recreation and golf that serves the community and visitors alike.

By reimagining undeveloped parkland and connecting people to a range of world-class amenities, this project promises to shape a sustainable and innovative future for Sydney.

SPORTENG is proud to play a key role in bringing this vision to life.
