“I stumbled across an advertisement for SPORTENG, and I immediately thought to myself, ‘This is the job for me’.”
Joining SPORTENG as a new graduate civil engineer, Alex Geeves quickly became an asset to the team. He moved from his primary role to a 3D and drainage designer role, before recently joining SPORTENG’s talented team of civil engineers.
With professional experience ranging from hospitality, event organisation and civil construction, Alex is the perfect example that at SPORTENG, your motivations, passions and aspirations are as important as your career experiences.
Having studied a Bachelor of Civil Engineering at Griffith University, Alex spent several years working in hospitality.
“I was working in several different areas, ranging from hospitality, event organiser … and progressing into a team leader role running my own team. My engineering path began as an undergraduate engineer for a civil construction company, working onsite for a BP Service Centre.”
In this role, Alex developed his skills in drawings, quality management, site costs and invoicing. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit hard on his company and industry.
“Unfortunately, like many others, I was let go ... That’s when I stumbled across an advertisement for SPORTENG … I was worried I wouldn’t be considered for the role due to my lack of design experience. However, the idea of combining my biggest passion in life and my career path was too enticing to admit early defeat!”
After joining SPORTENG as a graduate civil engineer, Alex has gained experience through different projects. He has used these skills across the company under multiple projects managers.
“I began gaining knowledge and understanding of the work the company conducts when producing quality work for clients and eventually began moving into a 3D and drainage designer role. I have now moved away from solely working under one project manager [to support and help many].”
But the biggest change Alex noticed through his time at SPORTENG was his vision of a career in engineering.
“My initial thoughts when choosing a career in engineering was that the construction side would be better suited to my personality and interests. However, each day I work in the design field, my interests in engineering are fast changing. […] Since joining SPORTENG, I have needed to gain a new set of skills and understanding to design a final product.”
Proud of what he has achieved so far, Alex has already made up his mind about his upcoming future.
“I would like to continue my journey through SPORTENG […] I can see myself venturing into a project manager role further in my career, and I believe SPORTENG provides the opportunities to achieve this.”
“I have a great passion for sport, so being able to design fields from a community level, and even possibly playing on it myself, to stadiums, watching from the grandstands or on television, [it’s something that almost] doesn’t feel real to me!”
As for anyone who would be interested in joining the team, Alex explains, “Regardless of whether you have any design experience or even an interest in sport, you will still have the opportunity to develop skills quickly and grow as an engineer.”

Alex’ SPORTENG Experience in One Word: Fun!
“The good thing about working at SPORTENG is that they are open to letting me define my career path!”
Joining SPORTENG as an undergraduate civil designer, Cameron Nayar spent several years crafting his professional journey to where he is now – a chartered senior civil engineer.
While most of us must go through the tedious task of searching and applying for the perfect job position, Cameron’s story started a bit differently.
“I didn’t apply! I sent my resume to my cousin in the hope he could find me an engineering firm for my university placement. He happened to cross paths with Paul Simpson from Arup, who is Jarrod Hill and Gray Canning’s former Manager, who then passed on my resume to Jarrod. He called me for an interview and the rest is history!”
With a Bachelor of Civil Engineering and a Bachelor of Commerce up his sleeve, Cameron started his first year at SPORTENG learning CAD, 12D and attending construction sites, before moving on to project management.
He explains why this time was a highlight, “[I had] the opportunity to manage the design of the 2018 Commonwealth Games athletics tracks, which to this date is a career highlight for me. During this year … I was also promoted from graduate to civil designer!”
But Cameron didn’t stop there. During his third year, he moved to Brisbane to undertake the opening of the new Brisbane office. After ten months, he moved back to Melbourne where he learnt more about building client relationships technical and project management skills. That’s also when his third milestone came in, with his first design management role for the Olympic Park redevelopment, which involved the management of six sub-consultants.
His next career step brought him to Sydney to open the SPORTENG Sydney office. At the same time, Cameron recalls, “I started studying for a masters degree and began writing up my chartered engineering competencies. I’m now chartered in civil engineering and project management and I’m currently studying for a Master of Professional Practice (Engineering).”
Now a senior civil engineer, Cameron has had time to reflect on his career trajectory.
“SPORTENG has not only fast-tracked my career but also given the opportunity to grow my profile in the industry. Being able to be client-facing at such an early stage of my career has helped me develop the relationships and soft skills that most don’t get the chance to, until later in their career.”
When asked about what his professional aspirations could be, Cameron remains uncertain.
“I don’t know! … What I do know is that I love seeing the finished product at SPORTENG; it’s satisfying to see something you have worked so hard to design finally completed.
” A feeling that he experiences too when recommending SPORTENG as a place to work.
“Working in a specialist niche consultancy gives you an experience you wouldn’t normally get from a straight civil engineering company. To design sports fields, you need to have a technical understanding of geotechnical reports, drainage, pavement design, civil infrastructure, in-ground services, agronomy, and irrigation design. Don’t pass up the chance to gain exposure to a broad range of specialties, as it can only help advance your career."

Cameron’s SPORTENG Experience in One Work: Dynamic!
“What caught my attention was the combination of sport and engineering; it aligned with my interests and the kind of projects I wanted to be part of.”
From graduate to project lead, Maria’s journey at SPORTENG shows how curiosity and passion can drive a career forward. Now a Civil Engineer, she reflects on her growth, the projects that shaped her, and what keeps her excited about designing Australia’s sporting spaces.
Maria’s Story
Maria joined SPORTENG as a Graduate Civil Engineer soon after completing her degree. “I was keen to find a role that combined technical design with projects that have a positive impact,” she says.
Over time, that goal has guided her progression into a Civil Engineer role. “I’ve taken on more responsibility across project management, client liaison, and 3D design. I now manage projects from concept through to construction documentation.”
When asked about her favourite project, Maria doesn’t hesitate. “The Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre Resurface has been one of my favourites. It’s such a high-profile facility in Sydney, and seeing the project evolve to construction was incredibly rewarding. Knowing how many athletes use the venue made it even more special.”
She enjoys the dynamic nature of her role. “No two projects are the same. One day, I might be developing 3D and drainage models, and the next, I’m coordinating with councils or reviewing cost estimates. That variety keeps the work engaging.”
Maria also credits her development to the people around her. “I’ve had the opportunity to work across different project types, from athletics tracks and netball courts to hockey pitches, at various stages of design. The support and guidance from the other engineers have been invaluable in helping me grow both technically and professionally.”
When the conversation shifts to team culture, she lights up. “Our group events always stand out, especially the team Christmas parties, where we do an activity together to celebrate the end of the year. They’re a great way to unwind and connect with everyone outside the office.”
Looking ahead, Maria has her sights set on continuing her progression. “I hope to keep growing into a project manager role, focusing on complex, multidisciplinary designs and helping guide younger engineers as they develop their skills.”
