Upgrading the College's ageing courts into a multi-use sport hub

The existing court sat above surrounding ground levels, creating complex access, safety, and compliance issues. The school aimed to accommodate more sports, including futsal, basketball, and tennis, within the same area without compromising playability or safety.

Adding to this, the project required coordination of retaining walls, fencing, and stairs on a tight site with level changes. The team also had to resolve emergency vehicle access for an existing fire hydrant and manage tight school budgets.

SPORTENG redesigned the space as an acrylic multi-sport court accommodating basketball, futsal, and tennis, with additional half courts for casual play.

New retaining walls were integrated with the fencing to maximise the playing area, while a new compliant stairway and handrails improved safe access.

A ramped vehicle path was introduced to provide fire truck access, ensuring compliance without redesigning the entire precinct.

Tiered block seating replaced costlier concrete terraces, creating a functional, social viewing area for students. And a small sand picnic zone was also added to enhance usability during breaks.

The redevelopment transformed Eltham College’s limited two-court space into a multi-sport precinct that supports more participation and safer play.The new layout delivers better accessibility, supervision, and emergency compliance, all while staying within the school’s budget.

Once the final surface treatments are complete, the courts will give students a vibrant, durable space for everyday sport, training, and recreation.
