Whitefriars College
2020-2022
Synthetic Surface | Hockey | Tennis
In 2020, SPORTENG prepared a feasibility study for Whitefriars College to develop a vision for an unused grassy area. The goal was to improve activation and access to a space that had poor ground conditions due to uncontrolled fill, often struggled in wet weather, and had an old building occupying part of the site.
The school were keen to increase their tennis court capacity, and to create a seamless connection between the new sports pavilion and the field of play. Following our initial feasibility study, SPORTENG assisted the school in engaging with the architect – HB ARCH – for the sports pavilion and then prepared detailed design and documentation for a field of play with 6 tennis courts and a small scale hockey overlay suitable for training.

Following our initial feasibility study, SPORTENG assisted the school in engaging with the architect HB ARCH for the sports pavilion and then prepared detailed design and documentation for a field of play with 6 tennis courts and a small-scale hockey overlay suitable for training.
While tennis courts were at the top of the school's wish list, they were keen to maximise the space. Unfortunately, the site was too constrained for a full-sized hockey pitch, so SPORTENG suggested a small pitch for training purposes.
The results were 6 synthetic tennis courts with a hockey pitch overlay. The area also allows for tennis net and hockey goal storage, high perimeter fencing, vehicle access for maintenance and connectivity to the new sports pavilion, which is elevated above the courts for spectator viewing.
Whitefriars College now has a first-class synthetic court surface that supports both tennis and hockey, perfectly complementing the school’s culture of sporting excellence. SPORTENG assisted the college in breathing new life into an under-utilised area by carefully considering site conditions and the surrounding environment to maximise space and enjoyment.
