With the rise of pickleball’s popularity across Australia, Knoxfield Tennis Club recognised the opportunity to expand its offerings to meet its members’ evolving needs. In collaboration with the City of Knox, the club decided to repurpose one of their traditional En-Tout-Cas tennis courts to include four state-of-the-art pickleball courts. SPORTENG was brought in to design and execute this transformation, helping establish Knoxfield Tennis Club as a leading hub for racket sports enthusiasts in the region.

What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Played on a smaller court with a lower net, it’s accessible to all ages and skill levels, offering both singles and doubles formats. Its easy learning curve and engaging social nature make pickleball an ideal sport for communities, further driving its rapid expansion in Australia and beyond.

THE CHALLENGE

The primary challenge at Knoxfield Tennis Club was adapting the existing En-Tout-Cas tennis court surface to accommodate multiple pickleball courts. Unlike traditional tennis, pickleball requires a smaller, hard-court surface, as well as precise markings to separate individual courts.

Additionally, the club wanted to ensure that the new facility would be accessible and enjoyable for players of all ages and levels, while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding courts and amenities.

THE SOLUTION

SPORTENG approached this project with a detailed conversion plan that would transform the En-Tout-Cas court into four top-quality pickleball courts. The work involved resurfacing the original clay-based court to create a hard-court finish optimised for pickleball’s unique gameplay dynamics. The primary focus was on optimising the existing court grades and designing the new courts to ensure effective drainage, preventing any future issues that could compromise playability or surface integrity.

SPORTENG carefully mapped out and applied the new pickleball court lines to maximise the playable area, ensuring ample space for each court without compromising the player experience.

Additionally, SPORTENG took care to align the new courts with Knoxfield Tennis Club’s high standards, ensuring the new facilities met the demands of regular and tournament-level play. Working closely with the club and the City of Knox, SPORTENG designed and executed the conversion to preserve the club’s aesthetics while adding a modern twist with the pickleball court integration.

THE RESULTS

The converted pickleball courts have been a resounding success. Knoxfield Tennis Club now boasts four dedicated pickleball courts, making it a premier destination for racket sports enthusiasts in the area. Members and visitors alike can enjoy pickleball on a high-quality, purpose-designed surface that enhances playability and durability.

In collaboration with the Victorian Racket Club’s recent addition of squash and racquetball courts, the revamped Knoxfield Tennis Club is now one of the largest public racket facilities in the region. With these enhancements, the club has effectively anticipated and responded to the growing interest in diverse racket sports, solidifying its reputation as a forward-thinking sports facility.
