Wyndham City Council set out to deliver a precinct that would serve both elite athletes and the growing Truganina community. They wanted a facility that could host competitive athletics while also providing recreational spaces for families and local residents.
SPORTENG was engaged to lead the design and delivery of the Fortitude Drive Reserve Sportsfield, transforming a greenfield site into a world-class athletics facility. The project includes a Class 2-certified polyurethane athletics track, a high-quality natural turf infield, and a multipurpose kickabout space with provision for a future synthetic hockey field. Supporting infrastructure such as LED sports lighting, an advanced irrigation system, and a carefully planned car park ensures long-term usability and accessibility for everyone.
This project won First Place for the Sports & Play Industry Association Design Award 2025.
Delivering this vision required tackling several complex challenges.
The site’s reactive clay subgrades were particularly problematic, as these soils expand and contract with changes in moisture, threatening the stability of the athletics track and surrounding infrastructure. SPORTENG developed advanced geotechnical and drainage solutions to ensure durability and long-term performance.
During excavation, large rocks were discovered across the site, requiring removal and further geotechnical assessment to safeguard the integrity of the construction platform.

Stormwater management also required careful attention. To prevent flooding and erosion, we designed an integrated system featuring Gross Pollutant Traps (GPTs) and treatment ponds, which also support water conservation.
Adding to the complexity, the reserve housed the heritage-listed Stone Hut ruin (HO29). SPORTENG worked closely with heritage consultants to preserve and showcase this historic feature, weaving it into the reserve’s design in a way that both protects its significance and enriches the visitor experience.
Our design balanced high-performance facilities with community-focused spaces. The athletics track was engineered to achieve World Athletics Class 2 certification, providing a surface suitable for elite-level events while welcoming grassroots participation. The natural turf infield was supported by a specialised irrigation system designed to promote turf health and reduce water use.
Responding to additional requirements from Wyndham City Council, SPORTENG designed a retaining wall and fencing system at the northeast corner of the site. These were engineered with wind load considerations up to 2m, supported by an updated geotechnical report for shallow footing design.
We also refined the irrigation system with re-analysed sprinkler layouts, a full hydraulic assessment of pipework and valving, and upgraded components to improve efficiency and reliability. Updated technical specifications and documentation supported long-term maintenance and operational clarity.
To mitigate ground-related risks, our team conducted test pits to assess subsurface conditions such as soil stability and drainage. These investigations were critical to ensuring a robust foundation design.
Beyond the sporting core, the precinct was designed to welcome the broader community. A district-level play and recreation zone includes landscaped mounds, open grass areas, and informal sporting spaces, while the entrance design and a circuit track improve accessibility and create a welcoming experience for all.
The completed reserve reflects SPORTENG’s commitment to combining sporting excellence with community benefit. The athletics track and infield are world-class facilities, engineered for performance, durability, and sustainability. The broader precinct offers recreational opportunities for families and visitors, extending the impact of the project well beyond sport.
Sustainability was embedded throughout the project. Microplastic displacement solutions were integrated into the athletics track system, minimising environmental impacts. Recycled materials were prioritised during construction to reduce the project’s footprint. The upgraded irrigation system maximises water efficiency, delivering both cost and resource savings for Wyndham City Council.
Preserving the heritage-listed Stone Hut ruin ensures the site’s history is celebrated alongside its new sporting purpose. The retaining wall and fencing strengthen site stability while protecting against weather extremes.
Together, these elements create a facility that blends environmental stewardship, cultural heritage, and sporting performance, setting a new benchmark for municipal sports infrastructure.
Fortitude Drive Reserve demonstrates how smart design can deliver long-lasting community and elite sporting benefits. By addressing technical challenges with innovative engineering, respecting the cultural fabric of the site, and embedding sustainability at every stage, SPORTENG has delivered a facility that will support Wyndham City Council and its community for decades to come.
Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw said:
“This reserve will be an asset to the Truganina community. We are committed to providing the diverse infrastructure needed to encourage our community to lead more active lifestyles.”
