The National Rugby Training Centre, located next to Queensland’s historic Ballymore Stadium, was envisioned as a world-class facility to elevate rugby in the region.

To achieve this vision, SPORTENG was engaged to design the Field of Play (FoP), ensuring it met the rigorous demands of elite athletes while integrating seamlessly into the existing precinct.

This project demonstrated SPORTENG’s expertise in delivering tailored sports engineering solutions that align with both client expectations and the highest industry standards.

THE CHALLENGE

Designing the Field of Play for the National Rugby Training Centre presented several unique challenges.

The location, adjacent to Ballymore Stadium, required careful consideration of the site’s natural topography and existing infrastructure.

The design process involved input from various stakeholders, including governing sports bodies, coaches, and athletes, each with distinct priorities and expectations.

Furthermore, the project scope was extensive, covering all phases from concept design to construction support, demanding meticulous planning and coordination.

Identifying and mitigating risks, such as potential site constraints or unforeseen issues, was critical to maintaining the project’s timeline and budget.

THE SOLUTION

SPORTENG approached the project with a structured and collaborative process, ensuring every detail was addressed.

At the outset, the team conducted a comprehensive review of existing site surveys, geotechnical reports, and service plans to understand the site's unique characteristics.
Workshops with key stakeholders helped define the operating conditions, ensuring alignment with their needs. Collaboration with governing sports bodies ensured the design adhered to all relevant standards.

The design process was iterative, allowing for refinement at every stage. Initial concept designs and cost estimates were presented to the client for feedback, ensuring their vision was reflected throughout. The schematic and detailed design phases added layers of precision, with value management workshops ensuring the project was efficient without compromising quality.

During construction, SPORTENG provided ongoing support, assisting with technical queries, reviewing shop drawings, and conducting inspections. This involvement extended into the defects liability period, where final inspections ensured compliance and quality.
