The Townsville Sports Precinct - home of the Townsville Synthetic Athletics Track, is an elite-level sporting precinct located between the coast and the iconic Castle Hill in beautiful Townsville.

Locally known as ‘The Red Track’ SPORTENG were pleased to be involved in the detailed design and documentation to resurface the track and upgrade the athletics facilities to comply with World Athletics Class 2 Certification.

THE CHALLENGE

The Athletics Track in Townsville needed an upgrade to retain its Class 2 Certification for records and results at the venue to be recognised by World Athletics.

Townsville Sports Precinct Venue Manager, Ben Payne explained:

“Without the certification, you can run all you like but you will not get recognised by Athletics Australia and hence go into the world system for rankings and qualifying time.”

THE SOLUTION

SPORTENG provided detailed design and documentation for a comprehensive upgrade of the athletics facilities.

This included the full resurfacing of the 8-lane athletics track, as well as the long and triple jump lanes. We also delivered drainage improvements and general repairs to the jump pits to enhance usability and safety.

Additional works involved updating and improving the track markers and inside rail, applying new line markings, and installing a new Apollo Discus Cage with integrated drainage upgrades. Each element was designed to meet performance standards and extend the longevity of the facility.

Local World Champion competitive sprinter Jake Doran says the upgrades were necessary for the region’s thriving athletics community:
“We see some really significant participation rates up here, especially in track and field. It’s a pathway that enables people to reach the highest heights of sport,” say Doran.

“I’ve seen the complete journey of my career here at the Townsville Sports Precinct, and I’m sure we’re going to see a lot more of those stories come out during the 2032 Olympics.”

THE RESULT

National Under 16 sprint champion, Uwezo Lubenda, says he is ready to break records on the new track:

“It feels very amazing. I can run faster because it’s a new track. I can’t wait for next season to get out there, do my best and break some more records and improve on my time!” says Lubenda.

SPORTENG were delighted to be involved in this important upgrade which provides the community of Far North Queensland with world-class Athletics facilities.
