The North Queensland Cowboys required a community, training and high-performance centre (CTPH) that was fit for purpose and supported both their elite Rugby league team and the wider Townsville community.

Situated adjacent to the Queensland Country Bank Stadium, this built-for-purpose sporting centre provides the club with a world-class facility to develop its squad and train and creates a world-class sporting precinct within Townsville.

Engaged by Cardno, SPORTENG provided the detailed design of a natural turf Field of Play. The elite field features a perched water table profile and a sophisticated subsurface drainage system, with a grade specifically designed for high-intensity rain events that can occur in the region.

THE CHALLENGE

Due to the tight footprint of the pitch, the sports lighting was required to be located pitch side of the perimeter fence. This required the design of the perimeter spoon drain and FIeld of Play subsoil pipework to work around not only the light pole, but also the pad footings for the poles.

THE SOLUTION

During construction, unfavourable ground conditions raised some challenges, but these were resolved through collaboration and consultation with the contractor and the client. These issues included localised soft spots which were removed and replaced with appropriate material.

THE RESULTS

This state-of-the-art facility was designed and built with a clear purpose in mind, and the results are exceptional. The full-sized rugby league pitch is complemented by a suite of sporting, administration and hospitality functions in the main pavilion, which overlooks the Field of Play, providing a world-class home for the Cowboys and expanding the Townsville Sporting precinct.

What's more, Football Queensland (FQ) and the North Queensland Cowboys have partnered up in late 2020, providing state-of-the-art training facilities for young footballers in North Queensland.

This means that the FQ North zone now gains access to the Cowboys' new Community, Training, and High-Performance Centre, which will benefit around 9,000 players.

This collaboration allows the development of regional talent and places Townsville as a training hub for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

Through this partnership, the new facilities offer various opportunities for sports development in the region.

FQ North General Manager Declan Carnes said: “These amazing new facilities have the potential to create many opportunities for our sport and others, and for our region.

“We’ll host junior training and clinics at the new Cowboys Centre, incorporating the indoor training zone and team facilities into our program.”
