Blacktown International Sports Park is one of Western Sydney’s key regional sporting hubs. As part of the precinct’s continued development,  Blacktown City Council initiated plans to deliver two high-performance training fields adjacent to a new Centre of Excellence facility.

The project aimed to create surfaces capable of supporting elite training environments while also accommodating community access. SPORTENG was engaged to deliver the detailed design and documentation for the natural turf field, develop design finalisation and construction documentation for the synthetic field, and design the athletics track grass infield to support multi-use performance outcomes.

Construction Budget: $100 million

THE CHALLENGE

Designing high-performance training surfaces within an established sporting precinct requires careful coordination between multiple stakeholders, existing infrastructure, and the performance expectations of different football codes.

Both fields needed to accommodate soccer, rugby union and rugby league training, requiring surfaces that perform well and handle frequent use.

For the athletics infield, the challenge extended beyond turf performance. The surface needed to support a range of athletics throwing events while maintaining a safe, consistent and durable playing profile.

At the same time, the fields had to integrate seamlessly with the broader Centre of Excellence development being delivered within the precinct. The design process required close coordination with the wider consultant team to align the fields with surrounding levels, drainage and operational needs.

Another key consideration was ensuring the documentation clearly translated the design into buildable outcomes. Strong technical documentation supported tendering and helped deliver the expected performance outcomes at a regional Centre of Excellence.

THE SOLUTION

SPORTENG provided specialist Field of Play engineering and design services for both the natural turf and synthetic surfaces.

For the natural turf field, we delivered the detailed design and documentation for an elite-level training surface. This included the grading strategy, drainage design, pavement layers and the integration of irrigation infrastructure to support consistent turf performance and long-term durability.

For the synthetic field, SPORTENG prepared the design finalisation and construction documentation. This approach ensured the final installed surface would meet the required performance standards while allowing flexibility for the specialist contractor to optimise the system during delivery.

Our team also supported the broader procurement process by developing clear technical documentation, drawings and schedules that defined the field construction requirements, helping contractors deliver to the intended specification.

Throughout the project, SPORTENG worked closely with the project team and consultants to coordinate the fields with the surrounding infrastructure and Centre of Excellence building.

THE RESULT

The new natural turf and synthetic fields are central to the upgraded Blacktown International Sports Park, with the athletics infield adding more flexibility for multi-sport use.

Together, the surfaces support high-performance training and community access, providing reliable and durable fields for multiple football codes.

For Blacktown City Council, the project strengthens the precinct as a leading sporting destination in Western Sydney, delivering reliable, high-quality facilities for both elite athletes and the local community.

Minister for Sport Steve Kamper advised, “The opening of the new Disability Sports Centre of Excellence is a landmark day in NSW disability sports, and this facility will play a key role in Australia’s success at the Paralympic Games and World Championships.”

“The Blacktown Exercise, Sports and Technology Hub is a $100-million investment in the health and future of the communities of Blacktown City and Western Sydney,” says Blacktown City Mayor, Tony Bleasdale OAM.

“It is a game-changer for sports in Western Sydney, providing the very best facilities in sports sciences, training and rehabilitation. It was designed in collaboration with partners; the Australian Catholic University (ACU), Sydney West Sports Medicine, AFLNSW and WentWest,” added Tony Bleasdale.
