The Banyul-Warri Fields Hockey Pitch forms part of Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds Campus sporting precinct, delivering a high-performance synthetic hockey facility designed for long-term use, reliable drainage performance, and seamless integration with surrounding access and spectator infrastructure.
SPORTENG was engaged by Polytan to lead the detailed civil and Field of Play design, translating performance requirements into a build-ready solution that balanced athlete needs, constructability, and site constraints.
Designing a compliant synthetic hockey pitch is never just about the playing surface. At Banyul-Warri Fields, the challenge was delivering a coordinated design that aligned the hockey field, car parking, pedestrian movement, drainage, and spectator areas into one cohesive outcome, while future-proofing all involved infrastructure to accommodate a future pavilion.
The project required careful review of existing site conditions, including geotechnical information, environmental constraints, existing services, and as-built data. Multiple stakeholders were involved, each with specific operational requirements around access, safety, and long-term maintenance.
On top of this, the design needed flexibility to accommodate council feedback and Polytan’s technical recommendations as the project evolved.
We provided end-to-end detailed design and construction documentation services, working closely with Polytan and Deakin University to de-risk delivery and streamline construction.
Our involvement covered the full design journey, from early site investigations and stakeholder workshops through to concept, design development, and construction documentation. We worked closely with Polytan and key stakeholders to define performance requirements, coordinate the Field of Play with surrounding access and infrastructure, and progressively refine the design as feedback was received.
By responding to council and client input along the way, we delivered a clear, coordinated, and construction-ready package that reduced risk on-site and supported a smooth delivery phase.

The Banyul-Warri hockey pitch under construction
The Banyul-Warri Fields Hockey Pitch now benefits from a robust, well-coordinated design that supports high-level hockey performance while addressing the practical realities of access, drainage, and spectator use.
By delivering clear documentation and aligned specifications, SPORTENG helped reduce construction risk and provided Polytan with a strong foundation for delivery on site.
The result is a future-ready hockey facility that supports university sport, community use, and long-term asset performance.
Torquay Tornadoes Hockey Club vice president Andrew Crowley said their world-class new home was a “true game changer” for the club’s members and broader community.
“With the shire’s long-term support, we’ve grown from one junior team in 2010 to a strong club across women’s, men’s, and junior competitions,” he said.
Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said she couldn’t wait to see Torquay’s hockey community make the pitch their own.
“These state-of-the-art facilities, delivered months ahead of schedule, will give local players, families and volunteers a place they can truly be proud of,” she said.
“We are so proud to see the results of our significant investment into sports infrastructure across Victoria that is helping our regional cities and towns become even better places to live, work, stay and play.”
