Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre (SOPAC) was used as the warm-up facility for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. Post Games, the facility has since been used as the main athletics venue within NSW and hosted many state and school carnivals. Due to the high level of use, the surface of both the competition and warm-up athletics track facilities had deteriorated and was in need of replacement.

SPORTENG was initially engaged to undertake a condition assessment for both the competition and warm-up athletics track and field facilities at Sydney Olympic Park. SPORTENG subsequently provided advice and options for the remediation works required for both facilities to comply with IAAF requirements.

THE CHALLENGE

Both athletics track surfaces needed to be replaced prior to the February 2016 Australian Athletics Championships, in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The construction works needed to be staged to enable the facility to continue t0 operate, as there were existing bookings for the facility during the time of works.

THE SOLUTION

Due to the age of the surface and the negative impacts on the underlying asphalt surface due to thermal expansion, both the track and the asphalt layer needed to be replaced.

THE RESULTS

Both the competition and warm-up facility track surfaces were redeveloped and then tested to be IAAF compliant.
