The existing synthetic training track at the Seymour Racecourse was constructed over 20 years ago and had reached the end of its life and needed to be replaced. The Victorian State Government contributed 50% of the funds for the project, while Racing Victoria and Seymour Racing Club combined to provide the other half.

The redeveloped synthetic track reduces the workload on the natural turf course track, and enables the turf surface to recover more rapidly.

THE CHALLENGE

Racing Victoria and the Club wanted the length of the training track to be increased and the reconstructed track required a new drainage network.

THE SOLUTION

To increase the length of the track, the southern bend was extended and crossed-over the existing site drainage discharge point. This design change meant that the southern bend radius was tighter and ran parallel to the course proper. Box culverts were used to allow the new extended alignment of the track to cross-over the drainage discharge point.

A new drainage network was designed which included a subsoil pipe at this low side of the track which discharged into a newly shaped swale that ran parallel to the training track.

THE RESULTS

The synthetic training track was redeveloped which increased the length of the track while also ensure the profile drained effectively.
