Western Sydney Stadium is a purpose-built rectangular pitch stadium that will be the home to several elite sport teams including Western Sydney Warriors (football), Parramatta Eels (rugby league), and New South Wales Waratahs (rugby union).

The $360M, 30,000 seat capacity stadium was opened in early 2019.

THE CHALLENGE

The detailed brief from Infrastructure New South Wales required a design that ensured the Field of Play maintained the highest quality playing surface, and that there were no negative impacts from heavy storm events, or high volumes of rain.

THE SOLUTION

To ensure no games were lost due to inclement weather, SPORTENG designed the Field of Play with a subsurface ventilation drainage system, allowing the stadium operator to rapidly draw moisture through the profile to ensure the surface is playable. The system is the first designed and installed in a stadium in Australia.

THE RESULTS

Bankwest Stadium became the first stadium in the world to achieve Leed V4 Gold Certification.

Working within the design consortium, SPORTENG was responsible for the detailed design and documentation for the Field of Play. The playing surface is flat and due to the subsurface ventilation drainage system, the subgrade is also flat.

The stadium roofline will provide 100% drip-line coverage to all spectators which in turn will increase the extent of shadows across the playing surface. Synthetic grass is used around the pitch to maximise the extent of vehicular traffic without damaging the natural turf surface.
