The Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC) is Queensland's premier athletics track and field facility consisting of two complaint IAAF athletics tracks and a competition and warm-up facility. Interestingly, both facilities consisted of two different track surfaces: in-situ full polyurethane for the competition track, and prefabricated surface for the warm-up track.

The condition of both the track surfaces had deteriorated significantly; the competition athletics track surface had become plasticised in some areas, while the warm-up athletics track surface had become so hard it was cracking and crumbling.

THE CHALLENGE

The remediation works needed to occur during appropriate warm and dry weather conditions which, coincided with the athletics season. The construction works had to be staged to allow the overall facility to still host events during the athletics season.

THE SOLUTION

SPORTENG was initially engaged to undertake a condition assessment for both the competition and warm-up athletics track and field facilities at Queensland State Athletics Centre. The report provided advice and options for the remediation works required for both facilities to comply with IAAF requirements.

SPORTENG then developed construction documentation for both facilities which included:

  • Resurface works to both tracks
  • Additional lanes to the competition track
  • Reconstruction of the competition track long/triple jump facility

SPORTENG assisted the client during the Construction Phase Consulting Services by attending witness inspections and reviewing hold point documentation.

THE RESULTS

Post-construction works, both tracks were tested and complied with IAAF requirements.
