In the lead-up to the 2016 Perth World Masters Games, the City of Canning identified the need to have the Ern Clark Athletics Track and Field facility to be assessed, as it was to host distance and throw events for the Games.

The assessment was to determine the condition of the athletics track surface and to determine if the facility complied with World Athletics requirements.

SPORTENG undertook the condition assessment and recommended the track be re-surfaced along with some other minor amendments to ensure compliance with World Athletics requirements.

THE CHALLENGE

The existing prefabricated surface had significantly deteriorated which meant to achieve World Athletics certification, either the whole existing system had to be replaced with a new system, or a prefabricated overlay could be installed over the existing system.

THE SOLUTION

To enable a competitive tender process, the SPORTENG led design included two options:

  • Prepare and resurface the existing system with a prefabricated overlay system.
  • Fully remove the existing system and install a new in-situ system.

Post tender evaluation, the option to grind back the existing surface and install a prefabricated overlay system was selected.

THE RESULTS

The athletics track surface was re-surfaced prior to the 2016 World Masters Games, and the facility subsequently successfully hosted the marathon, walk and throw events for the Games.

The facility now offers a world-class eight-lane 400 metre Mondo synthetic track – the same than the one used in the Athens Olympics.

It also features a 10-lane straight, long jump and triple jump pits, high jump fan, an integrated hammer and discus throwing cage.
